Though the classic stripe has long been associated with
sporty t-shirts, French sailors, Venetian gondoliers, and inexpensive knockabout
play clothes, now is the time to rethink. Stripes were one of the most
resounding messages for spring/summer 2001, and on a recent trip up and down
Madison Avenue, the stripe was seen in almost every incarnation in some of the
top shops and boutiques 'and they don't come cheap'.
Missoni, (1009
Madison Avenue, 517-9339) is known for their signature jersey knit zig- zag
stripes for both men and women, and they currently have a large assortment of
dresses, separates, (approximately $500-$1,000), scarves, and bags boasting
various color combinations and weaves.
Prada,
(841 Madison Avenue, 327-4200) made a statement with stripes for spring/summer,
with a widely photographed striped long sleeved sweater ($640) which was paired
with an off white cotton pleated skirt, as well as a striped cotton skirt in
stripes of ivory and orange. Though they are sold out of both, and do not
expect any more shipments because they have run out of the fabric, an exact
'copy' of the sweater is available at Club Monaco at 55th and 5th avenue (646
497-1444)...for a mere $79: perfect for those who want the look, but don't want
to spend the money!
Sonia Rykiel, (849 Madison Avenue,
396-3060) is known for her trademark 'skinny' knits, and there is currently a
candy striped cotton blend sweater set in the window ($305 for the top, $470 for
the cardigan).
Ralph Lauren, (72nd and
Madison Avenue, 666- 2100) whose spring/ summer collection was very 'Coco'-
South of France, used black and white stripes abundantly...the most knockout
version was his floor length sequined halter dress ($9,000). And across the street at Polo Sport (888 Madison Avenue, 434-8000) a
sheer silk rendition is on display, in wide stripes of navy and white ($395).
Carolina Herrera, (975 Madison Avenue,
249-6552) used bands of color to create a graphic and sophisticated brown,
white, and red silk halter top ($975), paired with a brown silk full pant
($1780).
Gianfranco Ferre, (845 Madison
Avenue, 717-5430) used black, red, green, and blue stripes to create a rayon and
lycra two- piece form fitting floor length dress ($1,025-top, $1300- skirt).
