Coats on Sixth
Going Directly to the Source
We all know this is a banner coat season, with coats being the pivotal point for almost each and every collection. The vintage aesthetic has presided everywhere, and plaids, tweeds, donegals, houndstooth checks, and fur collars are giving coats the interesting twist. As I have said before, nothing in my opinion, compares to the original, and for the money, the authentic vintage sources are the best bets this season. Somehow, seeing mass produced vintage rags lined up on racks in stores from Bloomingdales to DKNY just doesnt cut it for me. So Ive been combing the 26th street flea market in search of the seasons perfect coat. One young woman constantly stands out with her terrific coat selection that is so right on. Sara Daha is a vintage dealer who can be found every weekend at the flea market. On a recent trip, I found a great selection of 50s and 60s coats, many with classic or oversized checks, houndstooths, tweeds, and plaids. I particularly loved a tattersall Courreges, a houndstooth maxi coat, and a tweed cape. . She also has a good selection of fur-collared coats, including a red belted version, the color of the season. . And if youre looking for classic camels hair, she has that too. Prices range from approximately $175-$300. Later on in the season, she will also have a selection of furs (and hers are usually quite distinctive). Sara is an aspiring designer, who began with a love of collecting vintage fabrics and clothing. She is inspired by texture, and the idea of taking old fabrics and making them into modern styles. (Isnt that what all the designers were basically doing for fall/winter 2000?). You will be able to find her for the first time, at the Metropolitan Pavilion Vintage Show from Sept 22-24, where admittedly, the prices will be higher than at the Flea Market. |
